As a full-time working couple with kids, a house and everything that comes with that, it's a challenge to pick and choose what events to attend throughout the year - but this one comes easy. It's not just a gravel race, it's a weekend long festival of camping, food, music, beers, bike rides and great West Texas hospitality! After five years racing at the highest level with the EF Education World Tour Cycling Team, Emily Newsom made the decision to focus on gravel and U.S. road races. A high speed crash in a stage race in May left her with multiple broken bones and a challenging recovery. Now, with only one race left in the 7-race Lifetime Grand Prix series, she, amazingly only missed one and even completed the challenging 100-mile Leadville Mountain Bike Race in early August. With her breadth of experience, we sought her insights on the state of women's road racing and the U.S. scene with its heavy emphasis on gravel. As an avid cyclist himself, he saw a need for an awesome grinder, with the help of the whole town they organized a 3-day event. The Rattlesnake Gravel Grind, held on March 24 - 26, 2023, in Sweetwater, TX was a weekend of gravel riding, music, food, camping and fun. We were invited down for some good ol' west Texas hospitality - and this is our experience! Dave and his wife Dee hauled their tandem down I-35, set up their tent in the Sweetwater Lake Campground and had a weekend filled with memories that will last a lifetime and new friendships that will as well.
